From June 26th to July 2003 I had the chance to join an English course called "Shaking up Shakespeare« taking place at the Semmering. About 90 students from Lower Austria as well as from the Czech Republic, Poland and Estonia joined one of the ten different courses at the summer academy with their main aim »Begabtenförderung«.
Together with our two teachers, Mag. Alma Semmler and M.A. Lisa Nazarenko, our group, eleven girls and boys, dealt with Shakespeare's biography, his work and especially with the influence he still has today in modern life. Therefore, we read a lot of different scenes out of his most popular plays, for example, "Romeo and Juliet«, »A Midsummer Night's Dream« and »Twelfth Night«, and compared different film versions with each other as well as analysing the characters.
We also had the pleasure to have the actor Nick Allen as a guest, one time reading Shakespeare's sonnets to us, and the other time we worked with him on a few sonnets. Another highlight was our excursion to Vienna where we joined a workshop for acting.
All together it was a very interesting week where we also not only had the chance to get to know other young people from our region, but also from other countries.
